Donald Trump, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos at a meeting of tech leaders at the White House earlier this year.Image: Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images Amazon is arguably the most feared name in all of consumer business at the moment. The online shopping juggernaut is smothering retail chains, spooking supermarkets, and steamrolling into probably half a dozen other sectors on the side. And its forward momentum shows no signs of slowing. That unnerving power has led some Washington lawmakers to wonder how this so-called “everything store” jibes with laws designed to keep any one corporation from gaining too […]

Walmart is on a quest to make its in-store pickup process free of human interaction. The big-box store is rolling out a giant self-serve kiosk tower for online orders to more than a dozen locations. Customers simply arrange their shipment ahead of time, visit the store, and access their order via a barcode scanner on the side of the machine. Each package is preloaded by workers. The Amazon logo is displayed at the Nasdaq MarketSite, in New York's Times Square.Image: AP/REX/Shutterstock For one moment on Monday afternoon, the prices of several stocks on Nasdaq including those of Amazon, Apple, eBay, Google, and Microsoft were all priced exactly the same, $123.47. Obviously, this couldn’t be correct; it would mean a sudden, massive drop in value for Amazon and Google and a huge increase in value for Microsoft and eBay. If it were true, Google’s market cap would fall from $623 billion to about $83 billion, while Microsoft’s market cap would be propelled to nearly $1 trillion. SEE […]

A Blue Apron box waits to be opened on a kitchen counter.Image: Scott Eisen/Getty Images A giant wall of lettuce, crates of vegetables, and gourmet food stands adorned the front of the New York Stock Exchange building on Thursday morning as meal delivery service Blue Apron celebrated its debut on the trading floor. Produce-related festivities aside, enthusiasm for the once hotly anticipated public offering has wilted in the past couple days as the company lowered its target opening stock price from between $15 and $17 to just $10. A stale day of trading that left shares stagnant at a time […]
